INCI Breakdown: What Is Actually in a Wendigo Candle

|3 min read

This blog is fictional for entertainment and testing purposes. Since the content is made up, please do not take it as real-world fact or advice.

INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) is the standard naming convention for ingredient disclosure in personal care. Candles fall under CPSC jurisdiction, not FDA cosmetic labeling, and are not legally required to use INCI. We publish ours because the people who read INCI deserve consistent vocabulary across categories.

This is the full disclosure for a 9 oz Wendigo candle.

Wax base (92% by weight)

Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, hydrogenated. Refined, bleached, deodorized (RBD grade). Saturated to raise the melt point of native coconut oil (24°C) to candle-suitable range (47°C blended). Sourced from a single supplier in Quezon Province, Philippines. Supplier processes coconuts from farms within a 50km radius of the facility.

Brassica Napus (Rapeseed) Seed Wax. Non-GMO, certified through the supplier's chain of custody. Sourced from a producer in northern France operating under EU agricultural standards. Used at 10% of the wax fraction for structural integrity — pure coconut wax has insufficient hardness at warm room temperatures and produces wet edges on the vessel wall.

Fragrance (8% by weight)

Parfum / Fragrance. IFRA 51st Amendment compliant. Phthalate-free declaration on file per batch (specifically excludes DEP, DEHP, DBP, BBP, DIDP, DINP). Custom composition produced by a fragrance house in Grasse, France.

For Birch & Bone, the composition breaks down to:

Betula Lenta (Sweet Birch) Tar Oil — 14% of fragrance fraction
Cedrus Atlantica (Atlas Cedar) Bark Oil with guaiacol — 18%
Iris Pallida Root Extract — 8%
Vetiveria Zizanioides (Haitian Vetiver) Root Oil — 12%
Cistus Ladaniferus (Labdanum) Resinoid — 12%
Birch bark accord (synthetic + Betula leaf trace) — 12%
Dry hay absolute (coumarin-forward) — 8%
Cupressus Sempervirens (Cypress) Needle Oil — 4%
Cold air accord (aldehydes + trace mint isolate) — 4%
Black pepper essential oil — 2%
Ambrox (synthetic amber, IFRA-permitted) — 6%

Synthetic aroma molecules beyond the named accords are proprietary to the fragrance house under our supply agreement. They are identified by IFRA category in the full composition document available on request.

Wick

Prunus serotina (cherrywood), FSC-certified through an agency chain of custody. Single-ply, 4mm wide, 0.5mm thick. No accelerant coating. No metal core. Base clip is zinc (lead-free), sourced through the wick supplier.

Vessel

Soda-lime glass. Not recycled content — recycled glass introduces colour variability and thermal-shock inconsistency we have not been able to control for at our scale. Manufactured in Lancaster, Ohio.

Excluded from formulation

Paraffin
Soy
Palm and palm derivatives
Dyes (synthetic, natural, or carrier-based)
Phthalates (all classes)
Synthetic musks classified as persistent or bioaccumulative (galaxolide, tonalide, nitro musks)
Formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers
Undisclosed fragrance components beyond the IFRA-category level

What we cannot independently verify

Two items in the supply chain we have not personally audited:

The individual coconut farms within the Quezon supply radius. We have visited the processing facility (2023) and hold audit reports covering 2021–2024. Farm-level traceability is in progress.

The individual synthetic aroma molecules within the fragrance composition. We hold IFRA compliance and phthalate-free declarations per batch. The molecular-level identity of proprietary aroma chemicals is held by the fragrance house under standard industry IP terms.

We disclose both gaps because they are real. A brand that publishes a perfect-looking ingredient stack with no acknowledged limits is either lying or not looking closely.
